The shell is a beautiful and desirable M40 made by Quist, that retains over 95 percent of the original, factory applied textured field gray paint finish, with some traces of wear, mostly to the top of the dome. Where the paint is worn, the bare steel has taken on a nice, old patina. The Heer decal is the textbook Bigfoot style that one expects to see on these Quist helmets, and is nearly 99 percent intact, with only light patina from storage over time.

The split pins that hold the liner in place are intact and tight. Inside, this helmet features a typical wartime liner system, with a galvanized band. The leather is the typical Quist style, and is complete and still supple, showing only moderate honest wear. The original draw string is present.

The long side of the chinstrap is broken, with only a small portion remaining on the liner bale; the short side is still complete, with a typical wartime steel buckle. The inside of the skirt is size and maker marked Q64 with the lot number 295.
