Friedrich August Eberhard von Mackensen [1889 1969] was a prominent German general during World War II who served as the commander of the 1st Panzer Army and the 14th Army. Mackensen began his military career in 1908 and was a. Veteran of World War I. After the war Mackensen remained in the army and advanced through the ranks.

Upon the opening of World War II, he was the chief of staff of the German 14th Army during the invasion of Poland. His next assignment was as the Chief of Staff of 12th Army during the Battle of France. In 1941 he was given command of the 1st Panzer Army and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his leadership at the First Battle of Kiev and the Battle of Kharkov. In 1944 he was given command of the 14th Army in Italy but was fired for disobeying orders and was forced to retire from active service in the army. Following the surrender of Germany in 1945 he was arrested and later convicted in a British military court and was sentenced to death but his sentenced was later commuted to 21 years imprisonment.
