KNÖTEL, Herbert; PIETSCH, Paul; JANTKE, Egon. Uniformenkunde: Das Deutsche Heer - Friedensuniformen bei Ausbruch des Weltkrieges.

Hamburg: von Diepenbroick-Grüter & Schulz, 1939. An impressive and extensively illustrated reference to the cavalry uniforms of the Imperial German Army as they appeared at the outbreak of the First World War. Prepared for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Heereskunde by noted military uniform authority Herbert Knötel in collaboration with Paul Pietsch and Egon Jantke, with accompanying text by Major a. This second volume is devoted to Kavallerie (Cavalry) and documents the extraordinarily elaborate uniforms, insignia, helmets, equipment, and regimental distinctions of the German mounted forces. Represented are the Gardes du Corps, cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars, uhlans, mounted jägers, and Saxon and Bavarian cavalry formations, among others.

The principal attraction is the extensive series of striking color plates, meticulously depicting uniforms and their component details-including Pickelhauben and other helmets, tunics, parade dress, shoulder straps, cartridge boxes, sabretaches, horse equipment, insignia, and regimental variations. The surviving colors remain notably vivid, making the work valuable both as a scholarly reference and as an exceptional visual record of Imperial German military dress immediately preceding World War I. Issued in the original dark blue cloth portfolio, lettered and ruled in gilt. The portfolio shows expected edge and corner wear; contents exhibit some age toning and occasional light spotting, while the illustrated plates remain generally clean, bright, and attractive.

A substantial and visually impressive pre-WWII study of Imperial German cavalry uniforms, particularly desirable to collectors of German militaria, military costume, heraldry, and World War I history. Complete with all 62 color plates.
