TOTALLY ORIGINAL RARE GERMAN WWII ARMY M40 DD COMBAT HELMET. A fantastic Example of the Rarer and hard to find Original German WWII M40 DD - Double decal combat helmet. The shell is without damage with areas of surface aging and original combat usage, both decals are remaining but have been overpainted, you can still make out the original double army decals under the paint, as per the re-issue regulations introduced, decals were ordered to be painted over during the war.
Leather liner is original but could do with a softener. Comes Complete with draw string, missing chin strap, stamped inside with Maker and size stamped shell ET64 for maker Eisenhuttenwerke, Thale. With the outbreak of World War II, some changes were made to bring in a new model the M40. The changes made to this new model was the use of a more matt field grey finish and the vent holes were now integral to the helmets shell.
In 1940, the national colours decals and party shields, were ordered to be removed or overpainted. The new version of the German helmet began to be issued to German units from March of 1940.These helmets are known to collectors as M40s. A very small number of these M40s have been found with double decals, however, they are very hard to come by and are now considered rare.
This particularly helmet was from a collector's collection who obtained it in Russa many years ago, it was taken from a German soldier from the sixth army who actually participated and was defeated and captured/surrendered during in the battle of Stalingrad.
